The United States offers more than 20 different visa categories, each designed for a specific purpose. Understanding these categories correctly is the first step in any immigration journey.
Non-Immigrant Visas — For Temporary Stay
This category is for people who do not intend to stay permanently:
- B1/B2 (Tourist & Business): For short-term travel, visiting family, sightseeing, or attending business meetings. Typically valid for stays of up to six months.
- F1 (Student Visa): For full-time study at a U.S. university or college. Requires acceptance from an approved institution and Form I-20.
- H1B (Specialty Occupation): For skilled professionals sponsored by a U.S. employer. This visa is allocated annually through a limited lottery system.
- J1 (Exchange Visitor): For student exchange, research, or training programs.
Immigrant Visas — For Permanent Residency
These pathways typically lead to a Green Card:
- Family-Based: For spouses, children, parents, or siblings of U.S. citizens or Green Card holders.
- Employment-Based (EB): Includes several categories from EB1 to EB5, classified based on the applicant’s skills, investment, or extraordinary ability.
- Diversity Visa Lottery: Each year, this program offers an opportunity to countries with historically low rates of immigration to the U.S. (which often includes Iran).
